Decorating 101: Country Decorating

What exactly comes to mind when you think of country style decorating? You most likely think of roosters, antique quilts and anything that recalls grandma’s house all those years ago. Today, country decorating is much lighter and cheery than before. The look takes on bright colors and delicate patters that help give the style a welcoming feeling that no other style of decorating can rival.

Colors are bright, airy and soft

In the old days the colors of country decorating were blue, green, peach and rust. Today, colors that work well are those that you might not except in this type of décor; colors like soft blue, taupe or yellow paired with white-washed wood work exceptionally well. The basis of your decorating doesn’t have to be burnt red anymore.

Paint is everywhere

Can you recall what the kitchen or living room walls of your grandmother’s home looked like? The walls were most likely filled with plate collections, roosters, sunflowers and more. In fact, the walls probably didn’t have enough room much else? Bare walls that are barely decorated add to the open and airy feel of a room.

The walls could really benefit from a bright white or cheery yellow. Take contrasting trim and baseboards into consideration. When decorating the walls you should use framed wildflowers or botanical prints to add a nice splash of color.

If your furniture is older, it’s all the better. Paint your furniture for a romantic country look. When it comes to paint, just about anything can be painted; you can paint your walls and floors, you an even paint your accents and furniture. After the paint has dried adding to the worn, country appeal is easy, lightly sand the edges of whatever you’ve painted.

Open up the windows

The atmosphere of feminine country decorating can really be added to by opening up windows that don’t have heavy shades or draperies. In order to make sure that the room will remain bright you should use sheer or lightweight curtains if necessary, this will make sure that the room isn’t darkened. Maybe you should use delicate floral patterns to coordinate with the room’s colors, or consider a sheer lace valance.

Add a few old accents

Adding interest and depth to the room can be as easy as using old throws, pillow or candle sticks. If you happen to have a sofa that’s solid in color, you should invest in some plaid or floral patterned throw pillows.

Sure, there are people that still love the old-time country look, but a look that makes the room feel fresh and breezy is what other people are looking for. Make sure to avoid clutter like the plague, and make sure that you use cheery shade of cream, soft blue, yellow and anything else from nature in the décor. You don’t need to worry about matching furnishings, just get them from wherever you can including yard sales and flea markets. Painting mismatched furniture to give an old, worn and charming look is absolutely possible.
