Observe Kids Playing For Pointers For Home Science Projects For Kids
Believe it or not, it is no big deal finding home science projects for kids. Without the kids knowing, you can watch them while they play and you will realize all kinds of informal science experiments going on without all the data collecting you need for school assignments. All the rest of the steps are there
When you watch them play, its like watching a non-stop idea factory. They think one thing might be cool, try it, if it works they keep doing it, if not they fix it until it works out. When you watch kids sled down the hill in the winter, you will see them figure out if they should be on their tummy or to sit up, or where on the hill to build a “jump,” or if their is one place at the top of the hill that sends your the furthest, two people or three, use the plactic or the Flexible Flyers, or inflatable tubes, in the end its is a fun day full of informal science experiments at home, but on a sled.
Ever seen a group of kids at the beach try to figure out how to get the water to goto the paths they created with their sand toys? Or taking their Leggos to design their own creation? (without directions of course) ? Will the metal bats give you a hit better than the wooden bats? Will fireflies live longer in a box or glass jar? How long will they live in a jar to begin with? How many pedals do you need to let you glide the furtherst?
You can see that all of this is the seed for a science fair project, where you try a variety of things, keep a data sheet of the times, distances etc, do several trials, and come up with a conclusion. It could be the starting point for a new idea, like bike glicing can jump to Hot Wheels and how far they can go on different surfaces. At the end of the day, if you child comes to you and says they just can’t hink of any ideas for their science fair, you can sit them down and remind them about some of the things you saw them do when playing, and out will pop some great science projects for kids to do at home.
